Church is generally thought of as a place, a building. But actually, church is the people that make up the body of Christ as Paul describes in Romans chapter 12 and 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Church is not necessarily just a place we go but something we become. We are to be "new creatures in Christ" by being born of water and Spirit (John 3:5). When this is accomplished, the purpose is to find our place in the body or the Church. Jesus said that He was leaving to "prepare a place for you" (John 14:2). I believe that He has prepared not only a place in Heaven, but a place here in His Church. As every member of our physical body has a purpose, or a place, so does every member of the body of Christ. No one was called to just take up space on a pew. The problem generally is that no one searches very hard to find out what they are supposed to be doing. We all know that we should be fulfilling the Great Commission, but what purpose are we fulfilling in the body? Don't wait for your Pastor to tell you what to do, but pray and seek for God's direction. Then discuss with your Pastor the direction you feel God is taking you. Trust me, your Pastor is looking for people who want to help. Don't just go to church, get in church and become church!
